New colours. A redesigned website. A more modern look.

Sometimes those things are necessary.

But they are rarely the first question worth answering.

Before changing how a company looks, it is worth understanding what the brand needs to mean, who it needs to matter to, and what needs to change in the business or customer experience.

That is the role of brand strategy.

Visual identity is an expression, not a strategy

A visual identity gives a brand a recognisable form.

Typography, colour, imagery, layout, motion and other design elements help people recognise and experience a company.

But those decisions need direction.

Without it, visual design becomes largely subjective.

Does the logo feel modern enough? Should the website look more premium? Would a different colour make the company feel more innovative?

These questions are difficult to answer when nobody has defined what the brand is actually trying to communicate.

Brand strategy gives those decisions a frame.

It helps answer questions such as:

Who are we trying to be relevant to?

What problem are we particularly good at solving?

Why should someone choose us instead of an alternative?

What should people understand about us quickly?

How should the brand support the business we want to become?

Once those answers are clearer, design becomes much less arbitrary.

A rebrand often starts with a business problem

Companies rarely wake up one morning with a purely visual problem.

Usually something else has changed.

The company has grown, but its website still represents an earlier version of the business.

The product has evolved, but the positioning has not.

Different teams describe the company differently.

The brand looks credible, but does not explain why the offer matters.

A company enters a new market and discovers that its existing message does not travel well.

Or the business simply becomes harder to understand as more products, services and audiences are added.

These are not logo problems.

They are problems of clarity, positioning and structure.

A new visual identity may eventually be part of the solution, but designing it before addressing the underlying problem can result in a brand that looks different while communicating essentially the same confusion.

What should come before visual design?

A useful brand strategy does not need to become a hundred-page presentation.

It should make several important decisions clear.

1. The business direction

What is changing?

A brand should support where the business is going, not simply document where it has been.

That might mean moving upmarket, entering a new category, focusing the service offer, launching a product or becoming relevant to a different type of customer.

If the business direction is unclear, the brand will struggle to provide useful direction too.

2. The audience

Trying to appeal to everyone usually makes a brand less meaningful to anyone.

Understanding the most important audiences changes the questions you ask.

What do they already understand? What do they struggle with? What alternatives are they comparing? What do they need to believe before they are ready to engage?

This should influence positioning, language, information architecture and eventually the visual identity.

3. The positioning

Positioning is essentially a decision about the place you want the company to occupy in people’s minds.

It needs to make clear:

what you do,

who it is relevant to,

what makes your approach distinct,

and why that difference matters.

Strong positioning also creates constraints.

And constraints are useful.

They help teams decide which messages belong on a homepage, which capabilities deserve emphasis and which ideas are distracting from the core proposition.

4. The brand principles

A brand also needs a consistent way of behaving.

Not a list of vague adjectives.

Useful principles should help people make decisions.

For example, if clarity is central to the brand, that should affect more than the logo.

It should influence the language, UX, product design, navigation and even how the company structures its services.

This is where brand strategy begins to connect directly with digital product design.

Brand, website and product should not be separate conversations

One of the biggest mistakes in digital projects is treating brand, UX and technology as independent layers.

A branding team defines one thing. A website team interprets it later. A product team works from a different set of constraints.

The result can be visually consistent while still feeling disconnected.

For digital businesses especially, the brand is experienced through the product itself.

The navigation. The onboarding. The interface. The way information is explained. The quality of interaction. The speed and reliability of the website.

All of these communicate something about the company.

That is why brand strategy becomes much more useful when it is considered together with business goals, user needs and technology.

When should visual identity begin?

When the important strategic questions are clear enough to give design useful constraints.

Not when every possible question has been answered.

Strategy should enable progress, not delay it indefinitely.

At that point, visual identity can translate an abstract direction into something tangible.

Typography can communicate a particular level of confidence. Colour can create distinction within a category. Photography and imagery can shape perception. A design system can make the brand consistent across the website and product.

But now those decisions have a reason behind them.

The conversation shifts from:

“Do we like this?”

to:

“Does this express the direction we agreed on?”

That is a much better design conversation.

Start with what needs to change

If your brand feels outdated, inconsistent or difficult to explain, a new visual identity might be part of the answer.

But the more useful starting point is usually:

What needs to change in how people understand and experience the business?

From there you can decide what actually needs to be designed.

Sometimes that is a new identity. Sometimes it is positioning. Sometimes it is a website. Sometimes it is the product itself.

Often, it is a combination.

At greshio, we approach brand, digital products and websites from the same principle:

Start with the problem. Then decide what to build.

Planning a rebrand, new website or digital product?
Start with the problem you are trying to solve.

Let’s talk →

Before redesigning your logo or website, define what the brand needs to communicate.
